Kiribati’s President Anote Tong, criticised an Australian minister’s quip about “water lapping at your door”, saying it showed “moral irresponsibility”.

Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton was overheard quipping about the plight of Pacific Island nations facing rising seas from climate change.

Tong, who has long campaigned about the impact of climate change in the Pacific, said he had reacted with "sadness" rather than anger to Dutton's remark.

President Anote Tong, speaking to Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

I find that extremely sad, extremely disappointing. that we are making jokes about a very serious issue.

It shows a sense of moral irresponsibility quite unbecoming of leadership in any capacity.

As long as there is this kind of attitude, this kind of arrogance in any position of leadership, we will continue to have a lot of tension.
