Australian PM faces a challenge to his leadership after two prominent party members called for a vote for the Party Leadership.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop requested Tony Abbott to open a ballot for the Liberal Party leadership.

Mr Turnbull also resigned from Cabinet in the wake to stage a challenge on the Australian Premier.

Mr Turnbull speaking to ABC:

A little while ago I met with the Prime Minister and advised him that I would be challenging him for the leadership of the Liberal Party.

Now this is not a decision that anyone could take lightly. I have consulted with many, many colleagues, many Australians, many of our supporters in every walk of life.

A number of federal ministers told the ABC yesterday they expected a challenge to Mr Abbott's leadership before the end of the year. But is has come a little early for the Australian electorates. Photo: ABC News
