It is alleged they forced a 42-year-old woman into domestic servitude after bringing her from Fiji.

Australian Federal Police arrested Isikeli Feleatoua Pulini and Malavine Pulini on July 19, following a tip-off by the Salvation Army in August 2016.

The couple were charged with multiple offences that include human trafficking and keeping a person in servitude.

The 56-year-old man and 46-year-old woman appeared in court last Friday and were released on bail to reappear on September 22.

AFP Commander Lesa Gale said the case highlighted the reality that human trafficking can and does still occur even in countries like Australia.

“There are people in our community who are being exploited today, and the Australian community needs to be aware human trafficking can happen anywhere,“ she said in a statement.

“We want victims to know that there is a way out of these terrible situations for them and that we can help.”
