Massive 8.3 magnitude quake off Mexico triggers tsunami fears for 8 countries

An earthquake of a magnitude 8.3 struck at 4.49pm (Fiji Time) about 119km from Salina Cruz in Mexico, according to the Seismology Unit in Fiji’s Mineral Department.

In a statement, the Unit said “A great size earthquake with shallow depth source location occurred in the Mexico region. However, it does not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region.”

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says tsunami waves between 0.3m to 1m are possible for the coast of Fiji, although the estimated time of arrival is 7.15 am on Sunday.
