The Supervisor of Elections, Mr Mohammed Saneem said although the next General Election is a long time away, 06 April 2016 represented an important date in the electoral calendar for anyone seeking office in 2018.

“If you are interested in running for office, the Electoral Decree stipulates that you must spend 18 of the next 24 months present and living in Fiji in order for your nomination to be approved,” Mr. Saneem said.

Section 58 of the Constitution says the term of Parliament is ordinarily four years unless dissolved earlier, from the date of its first sitting after a general election.

Parliament first sat on 6 October 2014 and as per section 58(3), the President may dissolve Parliament acting on the advice of the Prime Minister after a lapse of 3 years and six months from the date of its first sitting. After that, the President is required to issue the Writ for Elections within seven days.

Mr Saneem advised potential candidates to monitor updates from the Fiji Elections Office as they continue their preparations for the 2018 General Election.
