Laitia Nalawa, 31, appeared in the Suva High Court today, where he claimed to have been assaulted by police during his caution interview.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said in a statement:

  • State informed the court that Nalawa did not raise any such allegations when he first appeared in the Magistrates Court despite been granted an opportunity to do so.
  • State informed the court the accused had waived his right to counsel in the Magistrates’ court.
  • The case has been adjourned to August 10, for State to produce Nalawa’s medical report before and after he was interviewed under caution.
  • The State was granted an application for a permanent suppression order for the rape victim’s name.
