Kubuabola meets with EU heads of mission to the Pacific

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola on Wednesday had a briefing session with the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to the Pacific, Ambassador Andrew Jacobs, British High Commissioner to Fiji, H.E. Roderick Drummond and French Ambassador to Fiji, H.E. Michel Djokovic.

The Delegation informed Minister Kubuabola of their appreciation on seeing relief efforts post Cyclone-Winston. The Delegation were impressed with the level of coordination being undertaken by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) as well as with the relief staff at various centers.

The Delegation advised that they were looking forward towards the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) meet in a few weeks where they hope to make further pledges of commitment towards relief efforts. Minister Kubuabola thanked the Delegation for their countries assistance and efforts that have been undertaken at various levels.

Minister Kubuabola advised the Delegation of Fiji’s initiatives with the ratification of the Paris Agreement post – 21st Conference of Parties. The delegation was informed that Prime Minister Bainimarama will be travelling to New York to participate in the High-Level signing ceremony. Minister Kubuabola and the delegation expressed confidence that more countries in the region would soon come onboard.

Ambassador Jacobs expressed the EU’s commitment to Fiji and the Pacific. Ambassador Jacob again reiterated the EU’s commitment to Fiji’s agriculture and judicial sectors. Ambassador Jacob also advised that the EU office in Suva will shortly be increasing its staffing in Fiji. Ambassador Jacobs also advised Minister Kubuabola on the upcoming Fiji-EU Political dialogue that will be held in Brussels towards the later part of the year.

Minister Kubuabola briefed the delegation on the progress with the Oceans Summit scheduled for the 5th to 9th of June 2017 which is being co-sponsored by Sweden. Minister Kubuabola was also pleased to advise that the current Ambassador at Large, Mr. Amena Yauvoli, is the newly appointed Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

There was also discussion on the regional architecture as well as Fiji’s bid for Presidency of the United Nations General Assembly 71.
