This was confirmed at a press briefing by the Minister for National Disaster Management, Colonel Inia Seruiratu at the National Disaster Management Office in Suva today.

There are still a number of our people in evacuation centres, right throughout the four divisions and again we are mindful of the fact that they need to be given alternatives, particularly to those who are in schools should the need be, however we are still working with the Ministry of Education there will be another meeting this afternoon following the provision of some time for them to again make technical assessment.

Minister Seruiratu added that two staff from the Ministry of Education flew to Taveuni and brought back some aerial images which the government would be analyzing, which would give them a fair idea of what needed to be done, given the fact that schools are to resume next week.

Casualties at this stage remain 42 and the government’s focus is to maintain acceptable levels of health and hygiene so that health conditions would not deteriorate. Preventative health is another prime focus for the government and teams out in the field are working on particular areas of interest.

Seruiratu said that the tempo of operations was expected to increase from today, given that greater surveillance has been deployed to seek information.
