The Ministry of Youth and Sports today reiterated that the existing National Sports Policy and the Safety in Sports Participation Policy were developed to safeguard all sports persons and sporting bodies to ensure all Fijians participate and enjoy the sport of their choice safely.

The Minister for Youth and Sports Hon Laisenia Tuitubou was responding to queries from the media regarding last weekend’s incident where a student was not provided immediate medical attention after receiving serious injury.

The 2013 Safety in Sports Participation Policy clearly states that ‘it is the primary role of the sports organisers to ensure safety strategies and measures are in place that entails the provision of first aid, attendance of qualified first aider/medical provider.

The policy also states that ‘all sports organisers and the relevant stakeholders delivering sports or sports related activities should adhere to this policy’ namely the Safety in Sports Participation Policy.

The incident last weekend could have been avoided if organisers had abided by the policy and ensured all safety measures were checked and a proper risk management assessment was carried out.

Minister Tuitubou is calling on all National Sports Organisations and all their affiliates to enforce these policies so Fijians can continue to enjoy participating in sports and avoid and better manage injuries.

Injuries should be expected particularly in contact sport and it is the role of sports organisers to ensure that they address the necessary risk factors prior and during every sporting event.

I have asked my Ministry to follow up with all National Sports Organisations to emphasise the importance of the safety of all Fijians whether watching or participating in a sports event.
