The Vodafone Fiji, led consortium of sponsors which include Fiji Airways, C.J Patel Group of Companies, Telecom Fiji Limited and HFC Bank today handed over a $340,000 cheque to the Prime Minister who is also the president of Fiji Rugby Union to be equally distributed amongst the players and officials of the gold medal winning Vodafone 7’s team.

Spokesperson for the consortium, Vodafone CEO Mr. Pradeep Lal said:

“The players have delivered and earned their bonus as just rewards for their performance.  Three years ago when the Vodafone-led consortium took over the sponsorship of FRU, we agreed to work as One Team with One Dream and that was to take Fiji Rugby to where it rightfully belonged – right to the top.  We are therefore extremely proud of the achievements of the Vodafone 7’s team.  With back-to-back win in the World 7’s series and Gold medal winning performance at the Olympics, the team thoroughly deserves the status as the Number One 7’s team in the world.”

As just rewards for the blood, sweat and tears they have shed towards winning Fiji’s first ever Olympic medal, the sponsors are most delighted to reward the players and officials with a windfall $340,000 in cash bonuses.  This equates to around $20,000 in bonus to the each of the 17 players and officials who were part of the gold winning 7’s team.

We are proud of the team and the glory they have bestowed on our nation.  With their epic performance many around the world have taken to Google to find out more about our island paradise.  The gold medal win has done an unquantifiable amount of marketing and promotion of our country internationally which will provide major economic benefits to the country through the tourism industry.

Vodafone thanked all its consortium partners for their contribution in rewarding the players saying “we have proved that as local companies if we all work together and pool our resources for the common good, we can achieve greater things for our country”.

The honorable Prime Minister thanked sponsors Vodafone Fiji, Fiji Airways, C J Patel, Telecom Fiji and HFC Bank individually for their genuine and unwavering support to FRU and for looking after the welfare of the players.

“You have been the invisible 8th player in the team he said of the sponsors.  Without sponsors, the team could not have achieved this historic win”, The Prime Minister said.
