The Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan walked out of a press conference in London citing “rudeness” by reporters covering the inclusion of Jarryd Hayne into his training squad.

Ryan later clarified the media had been “verbally abusing” a hotel worker.

RYAN: “I happily answered their questions and had no problem at all with that at all. When a hotel staff member asked them to move back behind the area allowed to film, members of media started verbally abusing him. He was only trying to do his job. I couldn’t accept that.  ‘The standard you walk past is the standard you become.’ I couldn’t drop my values so stopped the interview. As simple as that.”

A statement from the Fiji Rugby Union stated Ryan had advised that they would like to get Hayne settled into training with the Vodafone Fiji 7s team. Hence, media access to their training venue will be restricted.

FRU: “Should Jarryd Hayne be selected for the London 7s, then all Media will need to apply for their Media access into the London 7s through the tournament organizers and can then interview him after the games. If he isn’t selected then a press statement will be released by Ben Ryan this Friday before the tournament kicks off.”

The Australian’s European correspondent Jacquelin Magnay said Ryan was “feeling the pressure” and “stormed off”.

MAGNAY: “Ryan was initially upset because a TV reporter asked him his name, and then he claimed the media was rude to an over-officious security official demanding television cameras move a foot further back onto the pavement.”
