The Fiji Rugby Union has today released the team list of the Vodafone Fiji 7s team to prepare for the 2016 Oceania 7s tournament

The tournament will be held in Fiji on the 11 and 12 of November at the ANZ Stadium in Suva and fans will get the chance to watch and cheer for them on home ground.

Seven new players have forced their way into the selected side and FRU CEO, Mr John O’Connor says that this shows the immense pool of talent that exists in Fiji.

“Even though we have some 7s players that are currently overseas there is still a huge pool of talent still available here in Fiji. I am happy that we have been able to identify these players and bring them into camp to prepare them for the Oceania 7s.”

“They have shown a lot of progress in the two weeks of the camp which proves their selection into the team. I would like to congratulate them on their selection and wish them all the best for the Oceania 7s next weekend.”

The Men’s competition will comprise of ten teams which are Australia, Samoa, Tonga, PNG, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, American Samoa, Nauru, New Caledonia and hosts Fiji. They will play in two round-robin pools with finalists determined on the pool play results.

Telecom Fijiana

The Telecom Fijiana team sees two new girls forcing their way into the team, Asena Yalewalili and Ana Maria Naimasi after an intense four weeks in camp.

FRU CEO, Mr John O’Connor says that this is an indication that there are a lot of female players that are getting interested in the game of rugby.

“The FRU Development Unit has been promoting the game of rugby to girls around the country through the GiR program. With girls now wanting to play, this shows that the interest has intensified and that the pool of female players is starting to grow.”

“Congratulations to those that have been selected for the Oceania tournament and I would like to wish them all the best.”

The women’s Championship will be played alongside the men’s championship on 11 and 12 November at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The women’s competition comprises of seven teams, Australia, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Fiji and will be played in one round robin pool with the top team after the round robin declared the winner.

Tickets for the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships are on sale now and can be purchased from the Fiji Sports Council’s FMF Gymnasium foyer in Suva.
