The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre donated $7000 to the Fiji Rugby Union’s women’s rugby programme yesterday.
According to the NGO, the funding was aimed at the development of women’s sports – especially in rugby, a male-dominated sport.

“Gender equality is about women’s participation in all areas of life including sport and we hope this contribution will boost the Fijiana team’s efforts to qualify for next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup,” said Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Fiji Rugby Union was Sale Sorovaki, the national development manager.

“FWCC believes an effective sportĀ is an effective platform to advocate for gender equality and the elimination of violence against women,” Ms Ali said.

FWCC has for the past two years supported school girls rugby and is working with the FRU to develop a child protection policy.

Men’s club rugby and volleyball have also previously been provided financial support with the aim of developing male advocates for women’s human rights and awareness of the issue of violence against women.
