Two tries and a handy lead at half-time left optimists hoping Warren Gatland’s men would be in for a routine afternoon.

It was nothing of the sort. In fact, there were significant periods when another South Seas nightmare looked capable of unfolding as a patched-up Wales were made to scrap for everything by a Fiji XV who that were simply like men possessed in their pursuit of the scalp.

On another day, and with a more reliable goalkicker, they might have got it.

But credit to Wales as well. Despite having only four days’ turnaround from their Twickenham heroics, they dug deep into their resources of physical and mental fortitude to come through with the win.
