FASANOC hosts dinner for Team Fiji

FASANOC hosted a thanksgiving dinner for Team Fiji Olympic athletes and officials who participated at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Monday.

Team Fiji Rugby Men’s and Women’s Teams were presented with International Olympic Committee (IOC) Diplomas, by IOC Member in Fiji, Dr Robin Mitchell. The IOC awards Diplomas to the top eight finishers in competitions at the Olympic Games.

While the top three finishers have received medals since the 1896 Olympics, in 1949 diplomas for athletes placing fourth, fifth, and sixth were established and in 1981 diplomas for seventh- and eighth-place finishers were added.

The diploma is inscribed and signed by autopen with the signatures of the President of the IOC and the Head of the Organizing Committee for each Olympics.

The Team Fiji Rugby Women’s 7s team received their diplomas after finishing eighth in their competition. In additioneach Team Fiji athlete and official were presented with an IOC Certificate of Participation and a Commemorative Medalsfor attending the Olympic Games.

Team Fiji’s youngest member, Table Tennis representative Sally Yee, also presented on behalf of FASANOCa farewell gift to Team Fiji Men’s 7s Coach, Ben Ryan and his wife Natalie, in appreciation of their contribution to the success of the National Men’s 7s Team and for their time in Fiji.

Team Fiji Rugby Men’s 7s player, Savenaca Rawaca, was also to have received his Gold Medal and in his absence Team Manager Ropate Kauvesi received the medal on Savenaca’s behalf before delivering it the next morning.

Team Fiji Chef de Mission Cathy Wong, in her address for the evening, urged athletes and National Federations to start their planning processes now as Team Fiji moves forward in this new Olympiad towards Tokyo 2020.

Also attending the event was Team Fiji’s major sponsors and representatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Fiji National Sports Commission, as well as family and friends of Team Fiji athletes and officials.
