Largest gathering of netball players at Lawaqa this weekend

Over 500 netball players are expected to participate in the Punjas Digicel National Netball Championships this weekend at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

In a statement, Netball Fiji has confirmed that the two-day event will attract the largest local female participation in the sport.

Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau confirmed that 30 teams will compete on Friday 19th August and finalists on Saturday 20 August.

BOGIDRAU: “As always, we are expecting a tough challenge in the A and B Grade of our Major and Minor Divisions with confirmation that all districts have prepared well for this event. The grade to watch would be the 20 and Under competition, as many of these players will be vying to showcase their skills in order to impress national selectors who will continue to look out for exception talent.”

The president also acknowledged the sponsors Digicel Fiji and Punjas who have confirmed a total of $35,000 in cash and kind for the competition.

Digicel’s chief executive officer Darren McLean said the sponsorship highlighted the mobile company’s support for the sport in the country.

McLEAN: “I am looking forward to another exciting and competitive championships and I know the players from all the teams have prepared well for the competition.”

Punjas Group Manager Marketing Gopal Jadhav said the company rallied behind a sport that has over the years enhanced the empowerment of women.

JADHAV: “Netball promotes good values that can contribute to the success of women in all spheres of life. We are proud to be associated with the development of netball in Fiji and in building the lives ofyoung girls and women through sports; that in turns contributes to a healthy and vibrant community.”

The Fiji Auckland Netball Community will also field a team in the Under 20 grade.

Suva is the defending champs of the three grades in the major grade whilst Naitasiri was the Minor grade winner last year.
