Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) President Calvin Prasad is optimistic on a good outing.

PRASAD: “This is a special tournament since it allows only 5-minutes of thinking time per player for each game. Blitz chess is something that people of all ages enjoy, because many a time we have seen top players fall to young and upcoming players in this format. Nevertheless, I am hoping to play well and see what happens on the day.”

Winners of previous Blitz Championships like CM Ronald Terubea, CM Manoj Kumar, CM Noel Adricula and CM Goru Arvind have confirmed their participation. Ex-Olympiad rep Taione Sikivou, Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Gloria Sukhu and Women’s FIDE Master (WFM) Hilda Vukikomoala are also expected to pull a few punches during the event.

FCF Deputy Arbiter Gaura Raicar said younger players have a light advantage over veteran players.

RAICAR: “Since Blitz is a quicker format of chess, we would expect younger players to have a slight edge over the veterans. In past events, secondary school students like Rudr Prasad, Russell Talonga, Menash Fareed, Kabrina Terubea and William Bennion have produced interesting results and even defeated top players like Calvin Prasad and Manoj Kumar.”

The tournament will be hosted in different categories for Elite, Women and Junior and will be World Chess Federation (FIDE) Rated.

The National Sports Day Blitz Championship begins at 10:00 AM at Khatri Hall in Suva.
