A storm warning is now in force for Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa, with a special weather bulletin issued from the Nadi Weather Office this morning saying gale warning remains in force for Fulaga, Ogea, Namuka, Kabara, Komo and Moce.

A strong wind warning remains in force for Kadavu and nearby smaller islands southern Viti Levu, Northern Lau and Lomaiviti group.

Damaging winds may begin several hours before the cyclone centre passes overhead or nearby.

At a briefing yesterday afternoon, Fiji Meteorological Service director Ravin Kumar told local media, Tropical Cyclone (TC) Winston had slightly weakened and was a category 3 system.

On its projected path, TC Winston is expected to enter Fiji waters as a category 3 system tomorrow (today) and may bring damaging gale force winds over the Southern Lau Group early Tuesday.

As such, a tropical cyclone alert has been issued for the Southern Lau Group.

Close to its centre, the cyclone is expected to have average winds of about 155 km/hr.

Tropical Cyclone (TC) Winston is projected to lie about 530km south of Kadavu and about 440km southwest of Ono-i-Lau at midday today.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston, category 3 was located near 24.1 south 178.7 east or about 465km southwest of Ono-i-Lau or about 570km south of Kadavu at 6 am today.

The Cyclone is moving East-Northeast at about 24km/hr.

Close to its centre, the Cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 120km/hr and momentary gusts to 170km/hr.

On this track, the cyclone is expected to be located about 235km South-Southwest of Ono-i-Lau or about 465km South-Southeast of Kadavu at 6 pm today and about 90km southeast of Ono-i-Lau or about 460km East-Southeast of Kadavu at 6 am tomorrow morning.

For the rest of Fiji, rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop later today as Cyclone Winston moves closer to the Fiji group. Moderate northwest winds may become fresh and gusty from later today.
