Public transportation in the central division will stop this afternoon and the two northern towns have been ordered to close as authorities take proactive precautionary measures ahead of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

A government statement said the Land Transport Authority has ordered that in the central division, buses; taxi; mini bus and carriers are to cease movement from 5pm today for public safety reasons.

Meanwhile, the head of the north’s National Disaster Management Office operation Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea has directed that the Savusavu and Labasa Towns be closed from 2pm today until further notice.

(See below a video uploaded from Savusavu town after 1pm today)

Mr Vocea directed that all businesses operations be called off during a briefing of all Heads of Departments at the DISMAC operation center in Labasa this morning.

Vocea says this public advisory is not a curfew but a proactive precautionary measure for members of the public in both municipalities.

We will stop movement of all public service vehicles and police have been advised to monitor the movement of private vehicles as well.
This is a precautionary measure for members of the public in both municipalities.

TC Winston is expected to hit Vanua Levu from 3pm today.
