Tropical Cyclone Winston was located about 30km east-southeast of Taveuni at noon today.

Winston is moving west at 25km/hr. Close to its centre, the cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 220km/hr and momentary gusts to 315km/hr.

Warnings of destructive winds, torrential rain and storm surges for the Lau group and Vanua Levu is in force.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned the public to “expect very destructive hurricane-force winds.”

The potential for devastation is high and there is a very real risk that people will lose their lives.
