The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is advising the public to act with caution as a trough of low pressure brings continuous rain into the Fiji group.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Mr. Meleti Bainimarama said that the continuous rain could cause flooding in low-lying areas and appropriate measures should be taken accordingly.

BAINIMARAMA: “For those that live near rivers, streams, waterways, and those in low lying areas, you are requested to be watchful. Flooded drains may lead to flooded roads. Motorists are requested to drive with care.”

Mr. Bainimarama further said that the current weather may continue til Wednesday.

“Parents are advised to keep children away from swimming in rivers and playing in flooded drains and to monitor their whereabouts at all times. We also advice the public to boil all drinking water.”

A trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remains slow moving over Fiji.

In a report issued this morning, the Fiji Meteorological Services states that the low pressure with associated cloud and rain is expected to affect the group till Wednesday.

The Fiji Meteorological Services has forecast occasional rain and few thunderstorms over most places.

Situation:

  • Occasional rain and few thunderstorms over most places. Isolated heavy falls likely.
  • Moderate northeast to southeast winds, fresh at times.
  • Moderate to rough seas.

Outlook for Tuesday : Rain continuing.
