An earthquake occurred this morning at 7.33 AM, 78 km south from Luganville, Vanuatu.

10.00 AM: Cancellation of all Notices

The Seismology Section (National Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center) issued the following notice:

THIS MESSAGE APPLIES TO THE WHOLE OF FIJI

“This is to advise that this will be the final bulletin for the Fiji Region and be informed that the tsunami threat does not exist for Fiji from the Vanuatu earthquake that occurred this morning; therefore, the tsunami information cancellation is now issued.”

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL STATEMENT ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT.

9.34 AM: Advisory

Those living in coastal and maritime communities are urged to monitor radio reports following a 7.3 earthquake in Vanuatu this morning.

“Authorities determined that this earthquake could generate tsunami waves around 10.00am. While this will not pose a direct threat to Fiji, those living in coastal areas should closely monitor reports. Mariners and those living in these communities are advised not to travel out to sea without seeking advice from the relevant authorities.”

9.20 AM: Parliament evacuates, but still no tsunami warning

“An urgent message from the office of the Speaker and the office of the Secretary-General to Parliament, everyone is advised to evacuate to the tsunami evacuation point at Salvation Army along McGregor Rd immediately”

Sources from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Mineral Resources Department (MRD) all say there is NO TSUNAMI THREAT.

Earlier: 

A spokesperson of the Seismology Unit in the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) said there is no tsunami warning or alert. There is only a formation, which has no immediate threat to Fiji.

Evaluation

A major size earthquake with shallow depth source location, it was released from PTWC as Information Statement only but will have to monitor with Vanuatu Observatory for any major developments and will provide if there are any further updates or immediate threat that may arise.
