Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Fiji, Mr. John Patteson presented the cheque on behalf of the students and said that the contribution  is a small way of how the students can contribute in assisting to Fiji’s relief efforts.

I would like to thank you PS for availing yourself this morning for the occasion. It’s a small contribution from the students where they could contribute in such a way. The students started to collect fundraise when Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was in the country.

It’s a small amount of money but at least it will help the relief assistance, the students who are also residents of Fiji also contributed in some ways, that’s why the students are here today to show their appreciation for allowing them to be in your country as they have also been victims of the cyclone or as I might say interim victims of the cyclones. All the students from USP, FNU and FSM have made an  effort in contributing into this. This could go to the Prime Minister relief funds and that’s why they are here to hand over the cheque.

Commissioner Oti also updated Mr. Meleti Bainimarama in providing timber to Fiji.

I also wanted to update you of the dealing of timber, due to the shortage of timber here in Fiji, I have been dealing with a business in the Solomon they’ll be returning today. I have also connected with Vinod to Carpenters and to R.C Manubhai cause they deal with the reconstruction, they’ll be the one importing. This timber will help in assisting Fiji.

Mr. Meleti Bainimarama said thanked the Solomon Island student association and the Solomon High Commissioner for their contributions.

On behalf of the Fijian Government and the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, I would like to thank you for showing off your brotherhood support as a regional member of the great white Pacific. It is a wonderful gesture of the Pacific.
