Villagers of Saunokonoko in the interior of Navosa yesterday received relief and rehabilitation assistance from the Commissioner Western’s Office.

Minister for Youth and Sports Honorable Laisenia Tuitubou, who accompanied the officials from the Commissioner Western’s office, assured the villagers of Government’s assistance to all those affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

I want to seek your forgiveness for the delay in the supply of relief assistance to your village and I know that you also understand the extent of damage caused by cyclone Winston in the whole country. Government is assisting all Fijians that have been affected and we have received an overwhelming support from the international community as aid is pouring into the country from all over the world. I hope that you will bear with us as we are currently in a State of Natural Disaster.

Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau said that the reason for the delay in relief supply distribution to the village was due to its remoteness and inaccessibility by road following Tropical Cyclone Winston.

In the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston this village was also one of the adversely affected and we had tried to bring food rations and relief supplies across to them but were unable to do so because the roads leading up to the village were damaged. We also tried to airlift supplies by helicopter but unfortunately the village is yet to be geographically mapped so we had to wait until the roads were fixed and this is as close as we can get to handover their supplies.

Saunokonoko Village headman Iliatia Lagidrau was pleased to receive relief supplies as the village’s food source had been completely destroyed by the cyclone.

The villagers had eagerly been waiting for some sort of assistance ever since the cyclone passed and today we are extremely grateful to receive the rations and supplies from Government. I want to thank government on behalf of the people of Saunokonoko Village because we were in need of food rations because all our staple food and food sources were completely destroyed when Tropical Cyclone Winston hit us two weeks ago and greatly affected our source of income as well.

Two weeks worth of food rations, tarpaulins and building and farming materials were taken to Saunokonoko as part of the Western Division’s relief and rehabilitation assistance.
