New Zealand Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee will arrive in Fiji later today for a two-day visit to see first-hand New Zealand’s humanitarian aid operation here and to thank NZDF personnel helping with the relief in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

A spokesperson of the New Zealand High Commission to Fiji confirmed to Newswire that NZ Defence Minister will be arriving today.

The Hon. Minister Gerry Brownlee said in a statement;

I am visiting Fiji to support and thank our military people who have worked hard to assist the Fijians following last month’s cyclone

Minister Brownlee will visit Vanuabalavu Island together with Major General Tim Gall, the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand.  The New Zealand Defence Force has set up a maritime base at Vanuabalavu for its cyclone relief efforts in the northern Lau archipelago.

Almost 300 Defence Force personnel, including Army engineers and naval personnel, are helping rebuild schools, medical centres and other community buildings at Lomaloma, the main village on the island.

New Zealanders can be proud of the achievements of our Defence Force during this extensive aid operation.

It has been one of the NZDF’s largest peacetime deployments to the Pacific.

The NZDF has mainly been conducting relief operations in the Lau group of islands.
