Tuifagalele said jetties and roads on the maritime zone were either gone or severely damaged.

Meanwhile, a Telecom Fiji team of riggers and tower climbers are on their way to Taveuni to restore telecommunications with the island.

A senior technician from the TFL Labasa office who did not want to be named said four technicians were today on the east coast of Vanua Levu trying to find the passage across to Taveuni.

“There are no ferries because the local one was destroyed so we will go to the villages of Natuvu and Nawi and see if someone with a boat can be hired to take us across.”

He added the TFL had not heard from its two officers stationed at the Waiyevo government station since all communications to the island dropped at the height of TC Winston.

“There are some people on the southern tip of Taveuni with a direct line of sight with our tower atop Koro island who are able to access our easy tel service and they have been able to call out.”
“Our people are on central Taveuni and they cant be reached on any tele service”.

The team is on an assessment mission but are taking equipment to address the most likely scenarios.
