Vuma villagers yesterday celebrated the completion of rehabilitation work carried by Isra-AID – an Israeli non-profit organisation.

His Excellency Shmuel Ben-Shmuel, Israel Ambassador to Australia and the non-resident Ambassador to Fiji and Papua New Guinea was also part of the celebrations.

Vuma was severely hit by Tropical Cyclone Winston when it ravaged Fiji in February this year damaging about 24 houses in the village.

Ambassador Ben-Shmuel said he was glad to be at Vuma village and to see the villagers overjoyed despite the damage that was caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

BEN-SHMUEL:”I am delighted to be here and hear the people laughing. One day after the cyclone hit Fiji, there was no laughing in this village and there were faces of despair. It’s good to see the people of Vuma laughing again.”

Ambassador Ben-Shmuel said the work carried by Isra-AID symbolised the relationship and friendship between Israel and Fiji.

Commissioner Eastern Division, Mr Luke Moroivalu who was also present at Vuma village commended the Israeli Government for their assistance efforts and liaising with the NGO to help the community.

MOROIVALU:”We are grateful for the assistance offered by the Israel Government to rebuild Vuma village after the devastation caused by Winston.”

“The work carried out by the Government of Israel will go a long way for the people of Vuma. This is a day to celebrate.”

Roko Tui Vuma, Suliasi Tawake said they are grateful for the assistance provided by the Government of Israel.

Mr Tawake said it took Isra-AID fourteen working days to rebuild the twenty-four houses that were damaged by TC Winston.

TAWAKE:”This is a new beginning for us. We were down after the cyclone and we grateful for the Government of Israel for stepping in to assist us rebuild our lives.”

Meanwhile, Ambassador Shmuel Ben-Shmuel visit to Vuma village yesterday was his first visit out of Suva and Nadi and his fifth visit to Fiji.
