The French Navy patrol boat “La Moqueuse” arrived in Suva last night carrying a joint army and naval 43 member crew and relief supplies from New Caledonia.

The ship, also has on board a team of 14 military engineers from the French Armed Forces based in Noumea, New Caledonia to carry out rehabilitation works on Lakeba, Cikobia and Tuvuca in Northern Lau.

French Embassy Public Relations Advisor, Moira Vilsoni said the “La Moqueuse” is carrying 2 tonnes of temporary shelter and hygiene kits from the French Red Cross.

They will be deployed to assist in rehabilitation work on the islands allocated by the National Disaster Management Office. They have been briefed by the Embassy Defense Attaché and have been following the devastation after Winston from their air force colleagues.

Ms Vilsoni said the ship leaves for Lau tomorrow with additional local cargo including sacks of eight types of vegetable seeds and cuttings of sweet potato from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Ms Vilsoni said they expect the “La Moqueuse” to conduct its humanitarian mission in Fiji waters for four days. The French, like the Australian and New Zealand military in the country have come at the request of the Government and take direction from the NDMO.
