Death toll now at 20, 150 houses damaged

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has confirmed twenty people have lost their lives due to Tropical Cyclone Winston.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 150 houses were destroyed in the Eastern Division, and a further 60 are damaged.

NDMO Director Akapusi Tuifagalele confirmed to Newswire that ‪Tropical Cyclone Winston has claimed the lives of twenty people.  Director Tauifagalele said they were in the process of gathering details on these deaths.

In Kade village on the island of Koro n the Lomaiviti Group, all houses have been destroyed as well as the church, school and community hall.

27 houses have been reported as damaged in Central Division.

An International Donor meeting to look at humanitarian assistance is expected to be held at 4 pm this afternoon.

The Western Division Emergency Operations Centre confirmed names of those that lost their lives:

  • Taniela Voreqe, 48, from Vanuakula, Ra
  • Titilia Mua, 33, from Matainananu in Rakiraki
  • Keresi Tupou, 98
  • Pauliasi Naiova, 32, from Nayavutoka Village, Ra
  • 12-year-old Josefa Tumura from Naserelagi, Ra
  • Titilia Drekedreke, 46, of Naibita.
  • Mereoni Nariga, 24, of Dreketi Village
  • Gangamma, 76, from Rakiraki
  • Osea Sivo of Ba
  • a 54-year-old man who died at the Natabua Corrections Centre
