The official death toll after Tropical Cyclone Winston has now risen to 44. The latest case is a woman from Koro Island.

This was confirmed by the Director of Natural Disasters Management Office (NDMO) Mr. Akapusi Tuifagalele at a press briefing this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the number of people still in the evacuation centres are 14, 799. Currently, there are 476 evacuation centres of which 11 are schools.

Director Tuifagalele said the number of evacuation centres and the number of evacuees is continuing to drop and the Fiji Red Cross is now working with the NDMO in the clearing of schools which are being used as evacuation centres in the Eastern and Western divisions.

The Fiji Red Cross would move these evacuees through the provision of relevant tents to allow the repair of schools so that children would be able to continue on their education. The Australian Defence Force had provided 200 tents, 200 tarpaulins and 250 hygiene kits on HMS Canberra to provide assistance to the people of Koro.

As rehabilitation work continues, Director Tuifagalele highlighted the need to clear debris in affected villages and settlements, which is an issue that needed to be cleared now so that people would  be able to move on with their lives.
