The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) today handed over approximately $155,875 worth of equipment to the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), the items included generators, tents, jerry cans and a number of power tools.
A spokesperson for the Australian High Commission said that this is as part of the Australian Government’s wider support to the Government of Fiji.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Defence Force are pleased to be able to supply some equipment to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to aid the RFMF’s efforts in the recovery process following TC Winston.
This followed a request from the Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration, Hon Timoci Natuva, for Australian assistance with additional equipment for the RFMF Engineer Teams who are conducting cyclone response and recovery operations around the country.
High Commissioner Twomey said Fiji will soon move from the state of emergency to its recovery period and Australia would have to transition from the assistance it is giving to Fiji.
Let me reassure you that we would be sticking with you through that, through the Australian Aid programme but I think that transition is a good sign, the fact that we are moving to that next phase really is a testimony to the good work that the Fiji government has led in their emergency response and the completion of those immediate tasks that you set yourselves.
High Commissioner Twomey also acknowledged the dedication of the military engineers, who worked long hours in the heat to help families across the country recover, as well as the resilience and determination of the people of Fiji.
It has been an honour for Australia to be able to support Fiji’s response to Cyclone Winston through both our civilian aid program and the deployment of over 1,000 ADF personnel, including our flagship vessel, the HMAS Canberra.
While receiving the assistance on behalf of the Army Commander, RFMF Deputy Commander Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz thanked the Australian Government for the assistance.
I send to you all the warm greeting of the Commander who unfortunately cannot be here. We are indeed greatful for your kind assistance, this all goes to our great effort of rebuilding Fiji from the devastation that has come our way. Indeed our men there trying to rebuild and put all things together, what you have generously contributed is greatly assist to our effort.
