Education Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy has denied claims by NFP Leader Dr. Biman Prasad that he demanded Dr. Prasad’s removal from a function at a Suva school yesterday.

Dr. Reddy was Chief Guest at the prizegiving ceremony and inauguration of a new multipurpose hall at Tamavua Primary School.  Dr. Prasad is a patron of the school.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Dr. Reddy said he only raised the issue of there being another speaker before the Chief Guest.

You see the thing is Hon. Prasad wanted to give a speech before me…I said to them (organisers), I was not aware of the programme, that it doesn’t look good that someone else especially representative of another party will speak before the Chief Guest.

Dr. Reddy said he would have been satisfied with a change of programme, but Dr. Prasad decided to leave the function.

He decided to leave the function, he just walked out.

Dr. Prasad yesterday emailed Dr. Reddy accusing him of demanding his removal:

I was told when I got there this morning that you demanded that I be removed from the programme and not be allowed to speak.  You also demanded that if I am there you will not officiate as Chief Guest.

Dr. Prasad said the Minister’s behavior was unbecoming of an Education Minister.

I find such petty-mindedness behavior from you absolutely abhorring and unbecoming of an Education Minister.

Representatives of the school declined to comment on the issue.
