The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) parliamentarian Hon. Ratu Isoa Tikoca is expected to be suspended from Parliament following recommendations by the parliament’s Privileges Committee.

According to a report released a short while ago, a matter of privilege was raised with the Speaker on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, with Dr Luveni referring the matter to the Committee on Tuesday this week.

The complaint was lodged by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Committee heard that “on July 5, 2016, Hon. Tikoca made certain statements which quite clearly and selectively and more importantly intentionally targeted Fijian who are Muslims or adherents of Islam.”

The Committee recommended that:

  • Hon. Tikoca is suspended for the rest of the term of Parliament
  • During the period of suspension, Hon. Tikoca is not to be allowed to enter the Parliamentary precincts; and
  • If Hon. Tikoca fails to comply with any of the above; that necessary enforcement measures must be imposed to ensure compliance.

The government is expected to use its numerical advantage in Parliament to adopt the recommendations.

  • Hon Niko Nawaikula
