The farmers should be paramount in the affairs of Fiji Sugar Corporation as they were the backbone of the industry and had been adversely affected in recent years.

Social Democratic and Liberal Party spokesperson on economics, Hon. Viliame Gavoka said FSC would be successful if more people became growers, which would only happen if cane farming is profitable.

Hon. Gavoka welcomed the recent appointments at Fiji Sugar Corporation.

“Much needs to be done as the industry has struggled, tottering on collapse, the rolling strategic plan being contemplated should be the way to go, but should be tied to reality to create confidence, as over the years most forecasts have been very unrealistic”

The SODELPA parliamentarian said FSC management should be asked to deliver results.

“FSC has some capital projects that have been on the drawing boards for years and should be resolved one way or another, instead of moving forward one day and backtracking the next, as has been the case”

Hon. Gavoka stated that sugar contributed to many communities in Fiji and must be restored as a major industry in the economy.
