Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka says that civil servants need job security and the recent meal allowance increase is a short-term proposition.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last week announced meal allowance increase for all civil servants.
In a statement, former Prime Minister Rabuka said that there was no explanation or justification for the substantial increase, and the plan had not been properly considered.
“A civil servant can claim four meals a day (each 24 hour period), that is equivalent to $80.00. The budget implication will be substantial and will have an impact on other expenditure activities since there is no provision in the 2017/18 budget announcement for this new meal allowance.”
