The Prime Minister has urged people to be wary of some churches, as they wrongly interpret what his Government is trying to do.

PM Voreqe Bainimarama was speaking to people in Ovalau, Levuka last night.

Speaking in the itaukei language, PM Bainimarama said:

Many of the churches that are newly formed in Fiji have wrongly interpreted what this Government is trying to do. That’s why many people have been taken to face court because of sedition, including some of the politicians and chiefs.

Referring to the formation of a church in Lomaiviti that he learnt of when he recently visited Koro:

Some people are worshipping stones, some are worshipping bamboo and some Churches are disallowing their children to go to school. These are the kinds of beliefs we should be very careful of, not to destroy us.

Referring to a prior conversation with Maciu Navakasuasua, who is known to have led the march into Parliament in 2000:

Maciu says from the province of Ra where he’s from, there are a lot of myths and legends and stories from the past that they’re proud to talk about. However, some churches have transformed it to be demonic.
