Nurses in Fiji can expect an adjustment in their salaries this year.

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr Meciusela Tuicakau confirmed this to local media in response to the Fiji Nursing Association’s(FNA) claims of zero transparency in the salary of newly graduated nurses and experienced nurses.  The starting salary is between $17000 – $18000 for both.

FNA General Secretary Salanieta Matiavi  said this was an issue of concern and could see the exodus of nurses if the the salary structure is not revised.

Dr Tuicakau gave assurance that they would ensure all nurses got what they deserved.

“At the moment we have made salary adjustment, changes to salaries for some nurses.”

“We have corrected most last year who were on the lower salary end, however, we have picked up on some that will be adjusted this year.”

In response to the issue of overtime payment for nurses, Dr Tuicakau said those that didn’t receive payment were not approved to work overtime. He said that the nurses must get approval from their superiors and that they had to be strict on the process of overtime.
