The Fiji Police Force says that the house fire in Lami today could have been caused by the 4-year-old boy playing with matches with other children, this is based on initial information which was gathered by investigators.

This was revealed by the Spokesperson of the Fiji Police Force, Ana Naisoro in a statement this afternoon.

NAISORO: “Initial information gathered by investigators regarding the fire which claimed the life of a 4-year-old boy today indicates the victim had being playing with matches with other children.”

Naisoro said while this will have to be confirmed by the NFA as the actual cause of the fire, the force is again pleading to parents and guardians to be vigilant.

NAISORO: “We are again pleading with parents and guardians to be vigilant and mindful of fire hazards and the obvious threats it has on one’s safety. It is very unfortunate that a child’s life has been lost and we do sympathize with the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, NFA’s chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said upon arrival the house was fully engulfed in flames.

He said the boy was trapped inside.

MOCEITAI: “At 1103hrs, NFA Suva received a fire call and immediately responded with two fire appliances. Upon arrival at 1108hrs, the Fire Crews saw the house fully engulfed in flames. The Fire Crews used deliveries of water from the fire trucks to extinguish the fire.”

An investigation is now underway following the death of a four-year-old boy in a house fire in Vugalei, Lami.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro the victim was at home with a relative and an older brother when the fire started and attempts to locate him once flames engulfed their home were unsuccessful.

NAISORO: “His body was later found after officials from the National Fire Authority (NFA) managed to put out the fire.”

Naisoro said a team from the Police Forensics unit is currently at the scene.
