5.5 magnitude earthquake, no tsunami threat
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 km occurred 151 km south-west of Nadi at 7.11 PM today.
According to the Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources Department, this was a moderate earthquake with shallow depth source and did not pose any immediate tsunami threat to the Fiji region.
Note: The United States GS reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.1. However, Fiji’s MRD maintains that “the 5.5 magnitude in our official release is based on the calculations made on the data acquired from the Fiji Network, what USGS has is based on what the data they receive from their network.”
