The Embassy of the United States of America in Fiji this afternoon celebrated the 240th year of America’s Independence Anniversary at the Embassy in Tamavua.

Normally celebrated on July 4th the embassy celebrated Independence Day early and Ambassador Judith Cefkin said the occasion coincided with the 45th anniversary of the diplomat relation between the United States and Fiji.

CEFKIN: “Celebrating our Independence day in Fiji this year is also particularly special because this anniversary coincides with another very important anniversary. Just in few weeks on July 22nd we will mark the 45th anniversary of the diplomat relation between the United States and the Independent Fiji. As we celebrate these two anniversaries we take great encouragement of the friendships and the partnership of the two independent nations.”

Ambassador Cefkin said the theme “From Sea to shining sea” spoke volumes of the maritime ties that the US, Fiji and the four other nations share.

The Chief of Protocol of the Fiji Government Mr Atama Nawaciono echoed similar sentiments.

NAWACIONO: “It is important to acknowledge that since the establishment of the bilateral relationship in July 22nd, 1971. Our two countries have experienced collateral and bilateral relations and has worked closely in various areas of cooperation, including trade, agriculture and sports. On behalf of the Fijian Government and the people of Fiji we wish the United States of America a happy 240th anniversary.”

The US Embassy will be closed on Monday the 4th of July to observe America’s independence day.
