Yesterday’s meeting was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to personally congratulate His Excellency on his appointment as Kiribati’s new President since he took up office earlier this year.

It was also an opportunity for him to extend appreciation, on behalf of every Fijian, Kiribati’s assistance of $104,000 to go towards recovery efforts following Cyclone Winston.

HE Taneti Maamau thanked the Prime Minister for welcoming him and said Kiribati would work closely with Fiji to address the challenges posed by the impacts of climate change.

Mr Maamau is the fifth president since the country became independent in 1979.
