During the ceremony, Ambassador Prakash conveyed the warm greetings of His Excellency the President of Fiji, expressed best wishes for the Qatari people and reaffirmed Fiji’s desire to strengthen the existing relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Prakash reiterated the Fijian government’s gratitude to the State of Qatar for their influential support in pursuing the release of the 45 Fijian peacekeepers taken hostage by the Al Nusra Front whilst serving in the Golan Heights.

Ambassador Prakash also shared the efforts of the Fijian government in its recovery and rehabilitation works in the aftermath of its most destructive Tropical Cyclone Winston and sought assistance from the State of Qatar.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador Prakash presented a copy of his credentials to the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Sultan Bin Saad Al Meraikhi.

Discussions centered on investment prospects in Fiji and employment opportunities for Fiji nationals in Qatar, noting that a small number of Fiji nationals worked in Qatar mainly in the aviation sector and there was a possibility to grow the numbers especially in the hospitality and tourism sector as Qatar gears to host the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2022.

Ambassador Prakash was accompanied by Mrs. Mala Prakash and is the second non-resident Ambassador to Qatar since a diplomatic mission was established in the region in 2012.

Formal diplomatic relations between the Republic of Fiji and the State of Qatar was established on 20th October 2010.
