Neven Mimica held talks with Fiji’s Foreign Affairs Foreign Affairs Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. (DEPTFO).

In his meeting, Commissioner Mimica assured Kubuabola of EU’s commitment to support Fiji in its recovery from Tropical Cyclone Winston and announced additional EU financing to help address the adverse effect of El Niño in the rural areas of the country.

On Monday, within the margins of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Summit in Papua New Guinea (PNG), Mimica signed with Prime Minister Bainimarama an FJD 23 million financing agreement for a programme targeting recovery in the sugar and agriculture sectors.

“I am very impressed with the Fijian Government’s coordination of the post-Winston relief and recovery effort. This new EU assistance will help the most affected parts of the population. It is provided through budget support and will be instrumental in bridging the gap between disaster risk assessment and the further EUR 20 million that the EU will contribute to the development of the agriculture sector" said Commissioner Mimica.”
