His Excellency the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote yesterday received a sum of Five Hundred Thousand Dollars from Ambassador Zhang Ping of the People’s Republic of China for the repairs to the fence at the Presidential compound.

His Excellency the President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote officiated the hand over cheque grant presentation from the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Mr Zhang Ping.

Ambassador Zhang Ping said it was an honour for China to support a great country like Fiji.

PING: “We are pleased and honoured that the embassy can assist and I hope this funds can be of some contribution to some work that has been going on right now and will make the government house a great place for the people of Fiji to see and to present the image of the great country Fiji. On behalf of the Chinese Government, i would like to present you the cheque of $500,000 for the purpose of renovations of the state house.”

President Konrote in response applauded China for the timely donation.

KONROTE: “On behalf of the Fijian government and the people of Fiji I would like to thank you more sincerely for this generous gift from the Chines Government and please convey our sincere appreciation. I am glad this has come in today with the kind donation of this very substantial lot of money.”

 He said the donation now gives them the green light to go ahead with the renovations of the state house.

KONROTE: “Thank you I have no doubt with the help of your staffs the counsel and the team the work is going to continue soon and I have been updating the Hon. Prime Minister on the plans. I am so glad that we gave been given the green light to go ahead so once again thank you most sincerely and will look forward to its completition.”

He also said the Government is going to surprise the nation when the full renovation is completed.

KONROTE: “You must be reading the press that about how some people are having ago at us but we should repair the fence because it is falling apart but let them talk. The work is under way we are not going to tell them but instead we are going to surprise them.”

The President said upon the completion of the institution the gates will be opened to all.

KONROTE: “By the end of the day when we complete the institution we will open the gates to the public and they will be coming from the gate and the first thing that will attract their face is the fence.”

It is anticipated that the repairs to the fence will be carried out immediately by the China Railway Number Five Engineering Company (Fiji) Limited.
