The Prime Minister attended briefings at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations today, in the company of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

The Mission’s brief for the Prime Minister included an overview of Fiji’s UN peacekeeping commitments and future plans. The Fiji Mission’s Military and Police Adviser, Col. Manoa Gadai, highlighted the work of Fijian personnel currently serving in UN blue helmets in Darfur, the Golan Heights, Iraq, Lebanon and South Sudan.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Peter Thomson, said that 2015 has been a busy year for the Mission, with its campaigns for the Human Rights Council (2018 – 2020) and for the Presidency of the UN General Assembly’s 71st Session (2016 – 2017).

He said a good measure of the Mission’s work this year had been taken up in efforts to safeguard the wellbeing of oceans and seas.

He briefed the Prime Minister on the progress being achieved on the adoption of the draft UN Resolution to Mandate the Triennial UN Conferences on Oceans and Seas. He said that these Triennial Conferences were being created to ensure the integrity of the implementation of the sustainable development goal on Ocean’s health.

Noting that the Fiji Mission had led the adoption of three UN Resolutions at the UN’s 69th Session and that it was currently leading another resolution at the 70th Session, the Prime Minister commended the Mission staff for their hard work and commitment to keeping Fiji’s name at the forefront of UN initiatives.

The Prime Minister’s commendation arose from the Fiji Mission leading the Global Geodetic Reference Frame for Sustainable Development, the resolution for Observer Status for the Pacific Community in the General Assembly, and the resolution for Building Capacity for the Evaluation of Development Activities at Country Level.

n the 70th Session of the General Assembly, Fiji is the lead facilitator for the draft resolution to mandate the Triennial Conferences on Oceans and Seas.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Fiji Embassy in Washington, Mr. Akuila Vuira, was also present to brief the Prime Minister on the activities of the Washington Embassy.
