Mr Rajit Sen appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged by FICAC with two counts of Bribery earlier today.

Mr Sen’s lawyer Mr Devanesh Sharma of R. Patel Lawyers told the court that witnesses should bring more evidence of the alleged transaction between his client and Mr Kumar.

Rajit Sen is charged with two counts of Bribery by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

On day one of the court proceedings, the court heard that Mr. Sen between the 1st day of April 2014 and the 15th day of April 2014, whilst being employed by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority as a Senior Customs Officer, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse accepted an advantage of F$500 from Salesh Raj Kumar trading as Raj Kava Dealers on account of his performing his duty in his capacity as a public servant, namely changing the marking of the consignment from ‘examine’ to ‘not examine’.

In a separate incident the court also heard that between the 1st day of April 2014 and the 15th day of April 2014, whilst being a Senior Customs Office at FRCA allegedly accepted F$200 from one Salesh Raj Kumar trading as Raj Kava Dealers on account of his performing his duty in his capacity as a public servant namely helping the said Salesh Raj Kumar in his future dealings with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority.

The case will continue until Wednesday in the Suva Magistrates court.
