The donation was part of a partnership between the Australian Government and ENA to boost the FEA’s reconstruction of its electricity network in replacing damaged power poles and lines following Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The Acting Australian High Commissioner, Ms Karinda D’Aloisio thanked the Energy Networks Association (ENA) of Australia for its contribution, saying she hoped it would encourage other business-business collaboration.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Electricity Authority, Mr. Hasmukh Patel welcomed the timely contribution and noted that the donated vehicles and equipment would expedite FEA’s efforts in the power restoration exercise to all affected areas.

ENA Chairman Mr. Paul Adams said the energy network industry had moved swiftly to support the Australian Government response.

ADAMS: “We know how much communities depend on safe and reliable power supply, so when we heard about the scale of damage to our near neighbors (Fiji), Australian energy networks was keen to lend a hand. This is what network businesses do best, they work together to get the power back on and keep people safe.”

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Parveen Bala was on hand to receive this gift on behalf of the Government of Fiji and he mentioned that with resilience, hope, and determination, we will build back a better Fiji.

BALA: “Your gift to FEA today will not only assist in the restoration of power supply but will also go a long way in assisting with the roll out of our Rural Electrification Program. This Program allows rural Fijians access to electricity which is so important in enabling families to cook, to boil water for washing and cleaning, and providing light for children to study at night.”

The donation includes seven heavy trucks, crane borers, elevated work platforms and a general service vehicle.

It also include $411,000 worth of specialised tools and equipment such as electrical testing equipment, hydraulic cutting tools, drills and pole saws.

The Australian Government funded the shipping costs to transport the trucks and equipment to Fiji.

This donation builds on the Australian Government’s $53 million assistance package to help Fiji recover from TC Winston and will enable electricity works to be completed more quickly.
