The Fiji Police Force has renewed an appeal to parents and guardians to be more vigilant about the safety of their children.

This is after a one-year-old  died after being hit by a vehicle this morning at Vutuna Settlement in Tavua.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the victim was allegedly run over by a 3 ton truck in a private compound which was collecting bottles.

NAISORO: ” The driver of the truck was reversing unaware of the fact that the child was in harm’s way.”

Naisoro said the relative of the deceased and the four occupants of the truck are in police custody being questioned.

NAISORO: “She unfortunately died and a relative of the victim and the four occupants of the truck are in police custody being questioned.”

The Fiji Police Force are again pleading to parents and guardians to be vigilant about the safety of their children at all times.

NAISORO: “As we have stated, it takes just a matter of seconds for a tragedy to occur. Unfortunate accidents like these can be avoided and by being more aware of the possible safety threats around us, we can all help to save the life of an innocent child.”
