The parents of the 14-year-old boy caught driving could be charged for negligence, and there is a likelihood their licenses could be terminated.

LTA Public Relations Officer, Iliesa Sokia, told Newswire both police and LTA are separately investigating the matter.

At the ground of this investigation, currently police is heading its own investigation in regards to the 3 allegations that were made against this 14-year-old boy.

I think in the local context of this, in regards to the law that has been broken, he was actually driving without a driving license, and was also driving an expired vehicle which had an expired will tax.

He was also driving as an underage and not eligible to drive or operate a motor vehicle.

Mr. Sokia said LTA’s job is to warn the boy from the consequences the family is likely to face. He said there are a lot of implications surrounding the case whereby the parents could be charged for negligence, according to law.

It has now been exposed, we now know for a fact that are many many more out there who are out there, who are actually involved in similar cases. We just want to encourage parents to look after their vehicle, to look after their children you know especially those who have the tendency of giving the key to the children and driving around in the compound, and making them to wash the car. Because this is where the children will learn.

Mr. Sokia said that there is a likelihood of the parents licenses to be terminated if the need arises.

When it comes to scenarios like this, the parents will be taken to task and we can even deregister the vehicle, also we can terminate and revoke the parent’s license, that’s the penalties. But it is something that we do not really want to do for someone who has no prior knowledge which he becomes a victim of something he did not do.
