Three boys taking a joy ride in a modified racing car were caught by an Land Transport Authority (LTA) officer yesterday.

The 14-year-old joy rider was caught in Tacirua Heights in Suva, accompanied by two other passengers aged 12 and 13.

According to LTA, the three made off with the vehicle using a spare key and did so without the consent and knowledge of their parents.  The young driver’s mother said she had no idea her son knew how to drive.

The three boys were caught when an LTA officer became suspicious after seeing the driver of the vehicle.

“I could tell that he was too young to be driving, and when I saw his passengers they were even younger than him, and I suspected straight away that these boys were up to something and I called our enforcement unit,” the officer told Fiji Times.

The 14-year-old driver was later taken in for questioning by the police with his two associates for illegal use of a motor vehicle, driving without a license and driving a vehicle with expired wheel tax.
